Micron shares have had a hard time moving higher this week, even after strong earnings. Investors are still wary because the chip industry is cyclical and profit margins could come under pressure. There are also a few other factors to keep an eye on.
Micron shares went up a bit in premarket trading on Friday, building on a small gain from Thursday after the strong earnings report on Wednesday. Still, the stock is only a little higher than it was before the earnings came out.
This quiet response happened even though Micron had a very strong quarter. The company has become popular among investors interested in AI, and it reported better-than-expected results along with record sales growth.
Investors are mainly worried about two things. First, since the chip industry is doing so well right now, some people wonder if it is close to a peak and might soon lose some of its gains. Second, Micron’s profit margins are very high, reaching 87% last quarter, so any sign of falling margins could cause the stock to drop quickly.
Most analysts on Wall Street are still positive about Micron, but there are some less obvious reasons to be careful. After the earnings report, BNP Paribas stayed optimistic and raised its estimates, suggesting the stock could go higher from Thursday’s close, but they also recognized the risks. The firm pointed out that some people worry Nvidia’s next Rubin Ultra GPU might need less memory than expected, or that more servers could start using CXL, a memory pooling technology. Either of these changes could reduce the current tight supply as more production comes online.
To explain these concerns more clearly: if Nvidia’s new GPU uses less memory per unit, Micron could see lower demand for its chips. Also, if more servers start using shared memory through CXL technology, the need for dedicated memory chips could go down in some situations.
Most concerns about Micron are still about the ups and downs of the industry and whether high profit margins can last. But investors looking at the stock again should also think about these new supply factors, even though most analysts are still positive about Micron.
